INTRODUCTION:

Your teacher has been selected as a Science Ambassador to The Center for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.  She was chosen because of her qualifications and is an outstanding teacher from Region 10 in New York City.  This Ambassadorship provides her with the ability to meet with public policy makers at the CDC and aid in the development of educational materials for students all across America.  Your teacher has already been trained on the consequences of excessive alcohol consumption before and during pregnancy.

There is an upcoming conference for The Center for Disease Control  (CDC) which will focus on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS).  The theme of the conference is  “Fetal Alcohol Syndrome: A Lifetime of Consequences.”   Ambassadors from across America will convene to discuss this very important social problem and to propose possible solutions that will decrease the risk of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome.

TASK:

Your teacher needs your help to prepare for the upcoming conference for the CDC that will focus on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome.  Since the theme of the conference is  “Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS): A Lifetime of Consequences” you and your group will be responsible for helping her prepare for the conference by creating a series of PowerPoint Presentations.  Each of the PowerPoint Presentations will follow the steps of the Public Policy Analyst:

You will also follow the six steps of the public policy analyst in the section below.

·       *  Identify the nature of a social problem

·       *  Gather evidence to support the existence of the problem

·       *  Determine the causes and factors contributing to the problem

·       *  Evaluating existing public policies

·       *  Developing public policy solutions

·        *  Selecting the best public policy solution

You will create and give a survey to women in your family or a female family friend who are contemplating having a baby.  You will design the survey using Zoomerang (http://info.zoomerang.com). After you have gathered your survey information, you have collected you will share that information with the other members in your group.

PROCESS:

Your teacher will divide your class into six groups of four with designated topics for each group and a specific role for each member of the groups as follows:

Group leader-responsible for overall functioning of the entire group, based on teacher timeline and due dates

Editor-edits the written portion of the work and condenses the research gathered by the group

Graphic Artist-responsible to create and/or gather graphics for the PowerPoint and to insure that the graphics are appropriate

Surveyor-will create the Zoomerang survey and will be responsible for conducting and gathering survey data

CONCLUSION:

As a result of your research you will be able to identity pre and post conditions, which may directly result in the birth of a child with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome.  You will discuss at risk behaviors by teenagers, such as under age drinking, unprotected sex and a lack of factual awareness, which can result in pregnancy.  You will also gain knowledge of   populations that are most at risk of alcohol abuse and recognize the physical, mental, and emotional side effects of FAS, which result in a “lifetime of consequences”.  Finally you and your group will develop, present and promote a public policy to create an intergenerational awareness of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome within your community.
