Rap Artist: Tupac Shakur

INTRODUCTION:

The America Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has issued several policy statement warnings about the effects of music videos on young people (especially young women) in America.   As a public policy analyst it is your responsibility to discover ways to solve this problem.  How will you help thousands of young female Americans?

TASK:

The music industry needs your help.  In six groups of 4 you have been asked by your teacher to do a comparison of positive and negative images and lyrics of and about women in music videos and to develop a policy for the music industry.  The music executives will present your recommended policy to Congress.

Each group is going to look at music videos.   Once you has done a comparison, each student will present their findings in a reflective essay.  In addition each group will complete a group activity based on the steps of the Public Policy Analyst (see Process below.)

Each group will be assigned one of the following group activities:

Write a Rap or Song:

You will re-write a rap or song that depicts women negatively and make it positive or you may write an original piece.

Public Service Poster:

Create a public service poster emphasizing positive images of women (you may need to address the negative images)

Skit:

Perform a skit emphasizing positive images of women (you may need to address the negative images.)

Public Service Announcement:

You will produce something similar to a commercial, however, instead of selling a project you will be providing a service.  The commercial should be 5-7 minutes long and emphasizes the theme, how and why viewers should not support the media’s negative portrayal of women in the media.

To do this you will work in your groups of four.  Each group will be assigned one of the assignments (mentioned above) as a group activity by the teacher. Each member of the group will be responsible to contributing to the final project.

To do this work you will each have a specific role to play and a responsibility to fulfill.  Each member of the group will be responsible to contributing to the final project.  This is a serious job and you will be graded based upon how well you do your work (see evaluation rubric.)

Talk Show:

Produce a talk show with the theme of positive/negative images of women in the media.

Roles:

Writer

Researcher

Public Policy Analyst Coordinator

Producer (The producer will assign roles to be played in the Skit and the Public Service Announcement, and will produce the poster or the song with all of the members of the group)

Individually you will:

First you will define what sexism is.

Second you will read and analyze the articles in the research section relating to the portrayal of women in the media.

Third you will listen in class to popular music that is written to, for and/or about women.  Your independent assignment will be to choose two songs, outside of those listened to in class and compare and contrast the two works and how their messages relate to sexism.

Fourth you will each write a reflection paper that compares the positive and negative lyrics and images of women portrayed in music videos.  This essay should be 7-10 paragraphs, typed, doubled spaced, twelve point.

Follow the six steps of the Public Policy Steps (PPA) below that you will use in order to accomplish your goals:
