WEBQUEST:

Fire Safety at School

Introduction

History has been filled with historic fires in which lose of life and property have occurred.  In New York City, fires have been instrumental in bringing about new building codes and social change.  The Triangle Shirtwaist Company fire of 1911 claimed the lives of women and young girls.  In its aftermath new rules for fire safety were implemented.  Also, the struggles of single female workers were made public and lead to recognizing unions.  In recent history local social clubs in the Bronx and Long Island have gained headlines leading to new regulations governing these establishments.  However, at the root of the matter is safety.  What should you do if there is a fire at school?

Task

Your task as a student representative on the IS 275 board of School Safety is to create a model campaign for fire safety.   In this campaign you and your committee will learn about fire extinguishers.   You will learn about the differences between the several extinguishers.  You will help write a plan for instructing teachers how they can use a fire extinguisher.  You will also draw a poster using an acronym to spread the word of fire safety at our school.
