AGGRESSION MANAGEMENT THROUGH WRITING
REFLECTIONS
INTRODUCTION
Aggression in schools, whether actual violence occurs or is threatened is becoming a big problem in the nation’s schools. The violence of students towards other students and teachers has increased. Many problems are made worse by the fact that many students are dealing with learning disabilities. These disorders coupled with emotional problems often times create tense situations for all students and teachers. Many times physical violence or extreme verbal abuse occurs.
Students with these problems may or may not be given medication. According to experts, every case must go through some sort of behavior modification program.
BEHAVIOR
MODIFICATION PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
Students who are aggressive and/or have started fights will be referred to a counselor. The counselor will decide if the incident requires intervention. The intervention will come in the form of this behavior modification program.
Once the student has been referred to the program, they will meet with a counselor to discuss what happened. The counselor is there to provide feedback to the student about what they did, how they could have resolved it differently and what to do in the future.
After the counseling session, the student meets in a group session. The session is headed by a counselor, but most of the feedback will come from other students that were referred to the program. Each student will take turns getting advice about their situation from other students.
After the
group discussion, the students need to create some sort of writing reflection
on the experience and how it affects the aggressive incident that got them
referred in the first place.
TASK
You have been appointed by your teacher to create the writing part of a behavior modification program. You will use the resources in the resource section created by your teacher to create this program. This program will address aggression management within elementary schools.
The entire program is to include a discussion group for conflict resolution, one-on-one counseling and a writing journal for reflection time. For this part of the project, you will focus on the writing journal aspect.
Today, you will focus on the writing aspect of the project. The students will be asked to keep a writing journal. You will need to describe what kind of writing project could be done as part of the student’s behavior modification. Should they share this information with someone or is it to be kept private or is it to be shared at the end of the entire program? What kind of information should be contained within the writing? Should they write about the suggestions they were given or should they just write about their reactions to the session? Should they write down their feelings about the incident only or should they also include their thoughts on how they could have avoided the situation and future, similar situations?
SAMPLE INCIDENT
A student has gotten into trouble for fighting. Someone called him a bad name and he became violent with the other person.
In addition
to the information you have been given, you must complete the six worksheets in
the process section below. The pages
will be used to help your group produce and present a report based on the
worksheet results. A sample journal
entry should be created as well.

Your evaluation will be based on how well your journal entries cover the student’s experience in the project. In other words, the journal entry should reflect the counseling information that the student received
