INTRODUCTION

During the school year of 1970-71 in Dade County Florida, 11 year-old Peter Lander said some saucy and disrespectful words to his teacher.  The next day the Assistant Principal punished him for this by beating him with a paddle.  It was commonplace for the Administrators to use corporal punishment to discipline students.

TASK

You are a child in the Dade County School District and you have been beaten with a large wooden paddle for being late.  Rather than being subjected again to this kind of punishment you will come up with a list of alternate forms of discipline by:

            1.   Select a group of teachers who support this who will work with the students.

2.      Petition the students for suggestions

3.      Ask the parents for ideas.

4.      Compile a list of the recommended alternative forms of discipline.

5.      Present the ideas and suggestions to the Administration for approval.

6.      Present the approved alternative forms of discipline to the Community School District for final approval and implementation.

PROCESS

Week One:

The students will meet and discuss their ideas for how they want to go about creating alternative forms of discipline.

Students will post a flyer in the teachers lounge to solicit any volunteers willing to support this endeavor.

Week Two:

Students and the teachers will collaborate to design a format for petitioning the students for suggestions for alternative forms for discipline.

The students and teachers will send out a letter to the parents asking them for their ideas and support regarding alternative forms of discipline.

Week Three:

Teachers and students will review the recommendations and will compile a list to submit to the Administration.  The Administration will be asked to give their approval and any additional feedback to the recommendations.

A meeting will be set up with the Community School District.

Week Four:

The teachers, students and administrators will meet with the Community School District for final approval so that implementation of the new alternative forms of discipline are enforced.
