INTRODUCTION

Imagine you were not able to choose the T.V. shows you wanted to watch, or the books you wanted to read, or the church you wanted to go to.  Imagine a life where you couldn’t talk to certain people and you had to house military people and pay for their expenses.

Life in America in the late 1700s was much different than it is today.  The colonists struggled to survive in this new land.  They had to learn how to grow food, build shelters, and organize themselves socially/politically.  The traditional social hierarchy under British rule was unfair for the colonists. The monarchy inhibited the colonists’ freedom of choices.  Several events happened that upset the colonists and drove them to take action.  The three groups that existed among the colonists were the loyalists, patriots, and the fence-sitters.   If you lived at his time, which one would you be?  Your role is to be a colonist (patriot or fence-sitter) and write a dialog you are having with other colonists (loyalists) about the social issue of the time.  Oppression limits freedom.

TASK   MCj04046470000%5b1%5d

You will evaluate the British policies that created the problem of a lack of personal freedom

You will investigate the events that happened to the colonists using the AHPPA model.

You will create a written dialog, in the form of a play, among the loyalist, patriot, and the fence-sitter that is 2 pages long, typed, and double spaced and act it out.

You will create a picture that captures the problem depicted in the dialog.

PROCESS

You will be divided into groups of 3.  One student will play the role of a patriot.  One student will play the role of a fence-sitter.  One student will play the role of a loyalist.

After a study of the issues, using the resources listed below, each group will choose a specific issue involving individual freedoms that affected American colonists.

Each student will use the 4-step public policy and complete all 4 sheets.  It is important to use this PPA model in order to understand the problem of the day, gather evidence about the problem, identify the causes of the problem, and evaluate the final policy that was adopted.  Once you complete the worksheets, you will have all the information you need to complete the assignment of writing the dialog.

      1.  Define the problem

      2.  Gather the evidence

      3.  Identify the causes

      4.  Evaluate the policy

Go to the AHPPA and complete the following worksheets.

1.    Identify and define the problem of monarchy rule in colonial America and complete the worksheet at this site.

Worksheet1: Defining the Social Problem

2.   Gather evidence for this problem and complete the worksheet at this site.

Worksheet2: Gathering evidence of the problem

3.     Identify the causes and effects of British rule in colonial America and complete the worksheet at this site.

Worksheet3: Determining the causes of the problem

4.       Evaluate the effectiveness of the new adopted American policy and complete the worksheet at this site.

Worksheet4: Evaluating existing public policies

Your group will then write a play that illustrates the problem the policies in effect to deal with it, and its effects on the colonists. Keep in mind that all sides (patriot, loyalist and “fence sitter”) should be represented. The script for the play should be at least two pages long.

Each person in the group will also draw a picture that illustrates the problem, the policy adopted, or reaction to the policy. The picture should be large enough to be displayed in the classroom. You may use any media approved by your teacher.

Writing uses basic sentence structure; news story gives little or no background or analysis, and does not support new policy and uses little dialog.

Collaboration

There is strong evidence that all group members participated equally as shown in the dialog.

There is some evidence that all group members participated equally as shown in the dialog.

There is little or no evidence that all group members participated equally and uses little dialog.

Visual Piece

Picture is appealing; images represent the themes in the dialog.

Picture captures the social issue of the dialog somewhat.

Picture does not capture the social problem or the themes of the dialog.

CONCLUSION          You should have learned about the events that transpired between the British and the colonists that led the colonists to want to break away from British rule.  You should be able to explain the Boston Tea Party, the battle of Lexington and Concord, the Stamp Act, and the creation of the Continental Congress/Constitution.  You should have learned the negative social effects that occur in societies under a monarchy leadership.  Other nations may experience these effects under a monarchy in the future; therefore, you learned how democracy ensures equality and freedom for all.  The PPA model allowed you to follow a structured method in order to understand the social problem, causes/effects, and current policy.  Thank you for participating in this webquest.  In future webquests you will be exploring and researching other issues.
