The Facts of Reynolds v. United States:
In the 1870s in the territory that is now the state of Utah, the Mormons practiced polygamy (they married multiple spouses). The federal government enacted a law which made polygamy a crime. A Mormon (Reynolds) complained that polygamy was part of their religious duty.
