The Facts of Dred Scott v. Sandford:
Dred Scott, a slave from Missouri, was taken for some time to live in Illinois, where state law allowed all people to be free.  When he was taken back to Missouri he sued for his freedom.  He argued that because he had lived in Illinois he was entitled to be free.
