The Reynolds v. United States Decision:
The Supreme Court ruled in favor of the United States. The Court saw the practice of religiously-related bigamy as no different from the practice of religiously motivated human sacrifice; each was conduct in violation of social duties, and therefore prohibitable (punishable) by the state.
