The Supreme Court in a 9-0 decision reversed the decision of the New Jersey Supreme Court and held that the Fourth Amendment's prohibition on unreasonable searches and seizures applies to searches conducted by public school officials, that school officials need not obtain a warrant before searching a student under their authority, need not strictly adhere to the probable clause requirement of searches and that therefore the search in this case was not unreasonable under the Fourth Amendment.
