Steirer v. Bethlehem: Arguments

Argument #1

The COurt should side with Steirer in this case. The government (through the public schools) cannot compel citizens to perform work against their wishes.

Argument #2

The Court should rule with the school district (Bethlehem) and allow the school to require from its students, 60 hours of unpaid services to approved organizations in order to be allowed to graduate. "The stated goal of the Program is to "help students acquire life skills and learn about the significance of rendering services to their communities . . . [and] gain a sense of worth and pride as they understand and appreciate the functions of community organizations. "
