Morse v. Frederick: Facts

In 2002, the Olympic Torch Relay passed through Juneau, Alaska on its way to the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah. The route of the torch took it by the Juneau-Douglas High School. The principal decided to allow the staff and students at the school to watch the Torch Relay from the street. A senior at the school, Joseph Frederick joined some friends on the street to watch. As the torch and the cameras passed by, Frederick and his friends unfurled a 14-foot banner which read, "BONGS HiTS FOR JESUS." When Principal Morse observed the banner she demanded that it be taken down. All students complied except for Frederick. The banner was confiscated and Morse told Frederick to go to her office. She suspended Frederick for ten days because she believed the banner encouraged illegal drug use.
