Ingraham v. Wright: Arguments

Argument #1

The Court should rule in favor of Ingraham (the student) in this case. The eighth amendment prohibits the use of cruel or unusual punishment. The evidence in this case shows that the paddling the students received was exceptionally harsh.

Argument #2

The Supreme Court should rule in favor of the school (Wright). The school was authorized to use corporal punishment as a means of maintaining discipline as long as it wasn't degrading or unduly severe and followed the explicit directions and limitations contained in the school board's policy.
