Grutter v. Bollinger: Decision

The Court ruled 5-4 in favor of the Univeristy of Michigan Law School. The majority opinion stated that the Law School's admissions policy "aspires to achieve that diversity which has the potential to enrich everyone's education and thus make a law school class stronger than the sum of its parts...The policy does not define diversity solely in terms of racial and ethnic status. Nor is the policy insensitive to the competition among all students to make unique contributions to the character of the Law School." Citing the Bakke decision, the Court held that diversity could be a compelling state interest for the Law School to use race as a potential plus factor in its admissions process.
